Make a Budget

Getting started with your online business is just like starting any other business and you?re going to need a budget. This may sound complicated but it?s really not.

In a notebook make a list of all the expenses that you have each month. Expenses may include:

  • $10 a year for your domain (or $1 a month)
  • $10 a month for your hosting
  • $20 a month for an autoresponder like Aweber
  • $30 a month for educational products i.e. e-books and videos

Once you have your list of expenses, add them all up, and write down the total in your notebook. This is the amount of money you?re going to have to set aside from your regular job or other income sources every month.

Take action: make a list of all of your expenses in your notebook. Do you have enough money to support all of these expenses from your regular job? Could some of your expenses be reduced or cut out completely?

How Much Traffic Do Need to Earn $100?

If you can?t make $100 from a website then it?s not worth spending 20+ hours building content, doing SEO, building back links, social media, etc.

So you need to figure out approximately how many visitors you need to earn $100. I understand this is tricky to calculate so we?re going to make some estimations to get a ballpark figure i.e. do you need 100 visitors, 10,000 visitors, or 1 million visitors?

4 Important Formulas

Product Formula: (Use when you sell a product directly from your site)
visitors = total_earnings / (earnings_per_sale * conversion_rate)

Affiliate Formula (Use when?you are an affiliate for product)
visitors = total_earnings / (earnings_per_sale * affiliate_click_through_rate * conversion_rate)

AdSense Formula
visitors = total_earnings / (earnings_per_click * adsense_click_through_rate)

Visitor Value Formula (How much is each visitor worth?)
visitor_value = total_earnings / visitors

Definitions:

  • total_earnings: ?How much do you want to make? For our examples we will use $100.
  • earnings_per_sale: ?The amount you earn from 1 sale i.e. $7.00
  • conversion_rate: ?If you have 100 visitors how many will buy your product? ?0.02 means 2 out of 100 purchased.
  • affiliate_click_through_rate: ?If you have 100 visitors come to your site, how many will end up at the product?s sales page? ?0.1 means 10 out 100.
  • earnings_per_click: ?How much does AdSense pay you when 1 visitor clicks on the AdSense ad? i.e. $0.10
  • adsense_click_through_rate:?If you have 100 visitors how many will click on an AdSense ad? ?0.07 means 7 out of 100

Assumptions:
Estimating conversion rates, click through rates, etc is hard so here are a few default numbers you can use in your calculations

  • conversion_rate: ?0.01
  • affiliate_click_through_rate: ?0.1
  • earnings_per_click: ?$0.05
  • adsense_click_through_rate: 0.05

Many of you can achieve much better numbers than those listed above but I want to be conservative in my estimates.

Example 1

John sells a do-it-yourself car repair ebook on his website for $7 and has a 0.01 conversion rate. John will use the Product Formula to calculate how many visitors he needs to earn $100:

visitors = $100 / ($7 * 0.01) => 1,429 visitors

visitor_value = $100 / 1,429 => $0.07 per visitor

Example 2

Mary sells a video series on cat yodeling for $200 on her site and has a 0.01 conversion rate. ?Mary will use the Product Formula to calculate how many visitors she needs to earn $100:

visitors = $100 / ($200 * 0.01) => 50 visitors

visitor_value = $100 / 50 => $2 per visitor

Example 3

Cindy is an affiliate for the Learn Spanish Today audio series and earns $3 commission for each sale. ? Her affiliate_click_through_rate ?is 0.1 (10/100?website visitors click the link to the sales page). ?And the sales page has a conversion rate of 0.01. ?Cindy will use the Affiliate Formula to calculate how many visitors she needs to earn $100:

visitors = $100 / ($3 * 0.1 * 0.01) => 33,333 visitors

visitor_value = $100 / 33,333 => $0.003 per visitor (that?s 1/3 of a penny!)

Example 4

Tony runs Google AdSense ads on his game review site and earns $0.05 per click and has an adsense_click_through_rate of 0.05. ?Tony?will use the AdSense Formula to calculate how many visitors he needs to earn $100:

visitors = $100/ ($0.05 * 0.05) => 40,000 visitors

visitor_value = $100 / 40,000 => $0.0025 per visitor?(that?s 1/4 of a penny!)

Important ideas

Looking at the examples above there are few things to be aware of:

  • Sites that sell high-priced items ($100+) need 10x less traffic than sites with low-priced items ($10 or less).
  • When you advertise affiliate products you have to get lots of traffic because only a fraction will click on the ad to go to the sales page, and only a few of those will actually buy the product. ?This problem is compounded when you sell low-priced affiliate products.
  • Sites that run AdSense often need a lot of traffic because the earnings-per-click is low or the click-through rate is low.

?Traffic Explosion? Myth

Gurus love to talk about explosive traffic or exponential traffic growth but it just doesn?t happen for 99.99% of sites.

Almost every site that gets traffic from non-paid sources has its traffic increase little by little. ?If you can increase your traffic by 1,000 visitors each month you are doing very well!

Overly optimistic

To be honest, I think 1,000 visitors/month is a overly optimistic. ?250 visitors is a better estimate.

But imagine that it takes 10,000 visitors to earn $100. ?How many months of hard-work will it take?

So, how long will it take to earn $100 with the product you?re selling?

Is it worth it? ?95% of products aren?t worth it.

2 Secrets for Worthwhile Traffic

  1. Most products require far too much traffic to earn $100 and are not worth the time and effort. Traffic Gurus are are super selective about what they sell and the keywords that they try to rank for.
  2. 95% of people on the Internet are not looking to buy anything right now. ?They want to check their email, read the news, and get on Facebook. ?Traffic Gurus understand this and create sites that cater to the 5% of people who actually want to buy something right now.

Your turn

Using your best judgement estimate how many visitors you need to earn $100. ?Spend 5 minutes, run a few numbers, and come up with a number.

If you need 10,000+ visitors to make $100 then it?s most likely not worth it.

If you need 1,000+ visitors (and less than 10,000) you have a tough road ahead of you but it?s doable.

If you need fewer than 1,000 visitors then you?re in good shape.

Also, does your site cater to people looking to buy something (5% of Internet traffic)?

And Checkout the?Video & spreadsheet I made to help you calculate how much traffic you need.

Are You Targeting Buyers?

We all know that traffic is important in the lifeblood of any website.? But not all traffic is created equal. Many people that may come to your site are just surfers browsing the Internet with no apparent aim or purpose.? Many are just killing time.

What you want is traffic that is targeted and visitors that are ready to take action.

If your website is selling a product or has some sort of advertisement you want people who were ready to purchase.

If your website has Google AdSense on it and you want visitors who are ready to click on the ads.

How to attract motivated people

One of the best ways to find people that are really motivated to take some sort of action is to use trigger keywords in your post and especially in your title. Trigger keywords are usually action words or words that represent some sort of action.? Using these words can attract motivated people. These people are not surfing the Internet aimlessly but rather have a specific purpose and a specific need.

It?s your job to attract these people using trigger keywords and give them what they want.

Trigger keyword examples

  • buy
  • sell
  • learn
  • remedy
  • cheap
  • low
  • make
  • discount
  • find
  • stop
  • quit
  • fast
  • care
  • tips
  • get rid
  • how to

Anyone using one of these key words in a search is a person that is usually motivated and ready to take action.

If someone uses the word buy or cheap or discount in a search on Google then you know that person is most likely looking to purchase something.? It is very likely this person is ready to spend some money.

If a person uses a word like remedy or stop or quit or care or get rid of any search on google then you know that person has some sort of problem or ailment that they are looking to take care of.? This person has this a specific need.

These are the kinds of visitors you want your website.? These people are motivated and willing to take action.

But how do I get these people to my site?

One of the best ways to get these people to your site is to rank for the search terms they are looking for.

  • If these people use trigger words in their searches then make sure you use them in your titles and in your content.
  • If you do this correctly you can rank for these search terms and get traffic from very motivated people.

Keyword Research

Keyword research part 1

Once you have a list keywords that you would like to possibly rank for it?s time to do some keyword research using?Google?s free keyword research tool.

It?s very easy to use and I recommend sorting your search results by Global Monthly Search Volume. And what you?re looking for are relevant keywords that have the highest number of searches.

I made a quick video showing you exactly how to do this:
Keyword Research Part 1: Finding keywords with lots of searches

Keyword research part 2

In this phase of keyword research we want to determine how valuable different keywords are.

For example, if I had a website about dogs I would probably find that keywords related tostop barking dogs?would be more valuable than keywords like?dog tap dance lessons.

How to actually do this research is best explained in a video that I made:
Keyword Research Part 2: Finding keywords that are profitable

Keyword research part 3

The last step in your keyword research is to determine how much competition each keyword has.

Using the Google keyword tool you want to determine how many websites are competing for each keyword in your list.

The easiest way to explain how to do this is with a video I made:
Keyword Research Part 3: Evaluating Keyword Competition

Keyword research conclusion

In summary the keywords that you select for your website should match ALL of the following 4 criteria:

  1. Keyword is related to your target audience
  2. Keyword has enough searches each month to make it worth your time
  3. Keyword is valuable enough
  4. Keyword has an amount of competition that you are comfortable with

I did an experiment

A while back I did an experiment to see how fast I could rank for a silly keyword that had virtually no competition.

So I made a blog post with the title?Biggest Absolute Failure. I knew that my blog platform would put the keyword phrase?Biggest Absolute Failure?in all the right places and I waited to see how long it would take Google to rank me for that particular keyword.

When I checked my rankings a couple hours later I was surprised to find that Google had ranked my blog post #1 for?Biggest Absolute Failure.

I was excited about this but quickly realized that ranking for this keyword didn?t help me get targeted traffic. The phrase?Biggest Absolute Failure?wasn?t relevant to my niche, it wasn?t valuable, and no one was searching for it.

So when striving to rank high in Google make sure you are selecting keywords that match the 4 criteria in the list above.

Finding balance

Most likely you are not going to find the perfect keyword with tons of searches and no competition. Instead you?re going to have to find a balance between these things.

Avoid vague keywords

A lot of people want to rank for the keyword?computers?or?real estate?or?dogs. The trouble with these keywords is that they are super competitive and you really have no idea what a person is really searching for.

For example, if someone searches for?computers?they might be looking for:

  • parts for computers
  • buy computers
  • computer repair shops in St. Louis
  • computer programming languages
  • the history of computers
  • news about computers
  • schools and classes about computers
  • movies about computers

Each of these terms has a very different audience and you have no idea what someone is really looking.? So do yourself a favor and avoid vague keywords.

I covered this in more detail in:
2 Reasons Your Keywords Suck (And How To Fix Them)

But Nick, all this keyword research stuff sounds hard and time-consuming. I just want to rank high in Google and think about this stuff later.

Figuring out what problem your website solves and keyword research are the 2 most difficult things you will do to rank high in Google.

But they are the most important!

The domain that you purchase for your website will depend entirely on the keywords that you choose. If you skip keyword research you will buy the wrong domain and it will make it far more difficult to rank high.

Websites don?t just rank high in Google; they rank high for a specific keyword phrase. So make sure you rank high for the right keyword phrases.

Buy The Right Domain

Did you know that there are 500 million domains that have been registered?? (see Domain Counts & Internet Statistics)

With so many domains registered it may seem like a difficult task to find the right domain for your website. So I have come up with 4 simple tips to come up with the right domain for your website.

1.? Does it contain your keywords?

What is your website about and what keywords would you ideally rank #1 in Google for?

For example if you want to rank high for ?Toledo computer repair? then by all means go purchase ToledoComputerRepair.com. Having your keywords in your domain name helps a lot with search engine optimization.

Can I still rank high in Google even if my keyword is not in my domain?
Yes you can but it will be harder.

It?s kind of like running a marathon and asking, ?If someone tied my hands behind my back would I still be able to complete the marathon??? You could, in theory, still finish it but running a marathon is hard enough without any extra handicaps.

And ranking high in Google is a lot like running a marathon; it takes time, effort, and training.? Why would you want to make this even harder?

What if my ideal domain is taken?

You have a couple options here.

First, you can try putting dashes between words.

For example, if Toledocomputerrepair.com weren?t available then you might try Toledo-computer-repair.com or some variation.

Second, you can add 1 word to the front of your domain.

For example, if Toledocomputerrepair.com weren?t available then you might try BestToledocomputerrepair.com or A1Toledocomputerrepair.com or MyToledocomputerrepair.com.

If your name is Bob you could try BobsToledocomputerrepair.com.

Third, you could try adding additional keywords to your domain.

For example, if Toledocomputerrepair.com weren?t available then you might try ToledocomputerrepairAndService.com or ToledoPCcomputerrepair.com or ToledocomputerrepairAndSupply.com

What if I don?t have the time or patience to do this?

If you want to rank high in the search engines then you need to make the time and have the patience to do this. If you spend an hour or two finding the right domain it could save you 10 or 20 or 30 hours later on by making your search engine optimization easier (or less difficult).

Talking with a friend and generating ideas with someone besides yourself can really enhance your ability to be creative and come up with good ideas.

2. Choose a ?.com?

I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this but you really should get a ?.com?. I know there a lot of options and some of them are very popular i.e. ?.net?, ?.org?, etc.

But when someone tells their friend about your website they are likely not going to remember if it was a ?.biz? or ?.us? or ?.ca? or one of the other zillion types of domains.

All they will remember is that it was something like Bob?s Computer Repair. And when that friend goes to search for it it will likely type in Bobscomputerrepair.com.

So do yourself a favor and buy the ?.com?.

Also make sure you avoid ?.info? domains. They have historically been used by spammers and I believe it?s harder to rank with them.

But the ?.info? is so much cheaper. Is it worth buying?

There?s a reason it?s so cheap. Very few legitimate bloggers and website builders want to use them.

Don?t be enticed by a low price. You may save $5 or $8 right now but you may lose 30 hours or more to extra search engine optimization. Is this what you want?

3. Is it easy to spell?

Business owners sometimes like to have cute spellings or made-up words in their name. Just don?t do this in your domain.

For example if you are selling chocolate covered strawberries on the Internet you may think it would be cute to have a name like Ear-ResistibleStrawberries.com.

When people see it they may think it?s cute or funny but many of them won?t remember the actual spelling of the name. Instead they?re going to remember IrresistibleStrawberries.com and that?s probably what they?re going to search for.

It?s also wise to avoid words that are difficult to spell in general. Check out the 100 most often misspelled words.

4. Is it easy to remember?

I?m amazed at how often I drive down the road and see signs or billboards displaying someone?s domain like LearnHowToMakeMoneyOnlineWithNoMinimalInvestment.com. Seriously, who?s going to remember this domain later on and look it up? Absolutely no one.

Worse yet, some people don?t even bother to capitalize the first letter of each word so you end up with learnhowtomakemoneyonlinewithnominimalinvestment.com.? Imagine seeing that on a billboard while driving by 80 miles an hour.

A much more effective domain would be something like MonthlyMillions.com or MakeMillions.com.

Tips for more memorable names

Marketing genius, Eben Pagan, gave some simple rules for coming up with great names for products, businesses, and domains:

  1. Sound repetition is a good thing.? Products with great sound repetition: Palm Pilot (both words begin P), Black Berry (double B sound), or Coca Cola (the hard c is heard 3 times!)
  2. Make it rhyme.? Example: the two words in Coca Cola rhyme.
  3. Keep it short.? Don?t use more than 3 words for your product/domain if you can help it.? And 2 words is even better.

Here?s a video of Eben explaining this in greater detail (scroll down and watch video 3).

Case Study

A few years back I wanted to launch a blog that specifically dealt with traffic generation.? But before I could buy the domain for it and start blogging I had to come up with a really good name.

And the name had to conform to the 3 rules listed above (sound repetition, rhyming, and keep it short).? I went through many variations of names that included the word traffic.

I finally came up with Nick?s Traffic Tricks.? It has sound repetition (Tr sound in Traffic & Tricks); it has a rhyme (Nick?s & Tricks); and it?s relatively short (only 3 words).? And each word is fairly easy to spell though a few people think my name is spelled Nic.

As an extra bonus there was virtually no one competing for the phrase Nick?s Traffic Tricks and so from day 1 I ranked #1 in Google for the phrase. ?Too bad no one was searching for the phrase. :(

In retrospect I think Nick?s Tricks might have been a slightly better name because it?s shorter and the rhyme comes off a little better.? But overall I am pretty happy with the name I came up with.

Get Your Site Indexed

When your site is indexed by Google it means that Google is aware that your website exists and will most likely re-crawl your website and find new content at some point in the future. That?s it.

It does not mean that you will rank high for a specific keyword in Google. In fact 99% of the websites that Google has indexed do not rank high for any keyword phrase (or at least any keyword phrase that people are searching for).

If you want to rank high in Google, you first have to get your website indexed by Google and then you must optimize your website for Google. (If optimizing your site for Google sounds scary then I recommend checking out this Search Engine Optimization guide [affiliate link])

Again, being indexed by Google only means that Google is aware that your website exists. It doesn?t guarantee any sort of ranking for any keyword.

How to tell if your site is indexed

Go to Google and search for your domain. If you?re website shows up in the search results then it?s already indexed by Google.

How to get your site indexed by Google

You have to do 2 things to get your site indexed by Google:

  1. Have at least one page of content on your site.
  2. Get Google?s attention and let them know that your site exists.

The first item in the list should be easy to do.

The second item, getting Google?s attention, sounds difficult but is actually quite easy.
The trick is to remember that Google crawls and re-crawls lots of sites every day. And if you can post a link to your website on one of the sites that Google crawls then Google will notice that link, follow the link to your website, and index your website. That?s it.

That?s the magic formula.

How to build links from sites that Google already crawls

  1. Free back link from me ? Get a free back link from my site.
  2. Blog commenting ? Posting relevant comments on blogs that don?t have nofollow in their links is another great way to get indexed very fast. For more information on how to find blogs that don?t use nofollow go here: Why nofollow matters and how to find blogs that don?t use it
  3. Top Commentators Method ? This method takes more time than the others but can help you get indexed and build tons of backlinks super fast. It involves placing a few comments on a blog so you show up on their list of ?Top Commentators? which gives you a backlink to your site. The best part is that this list (with the backlink to your site) is displayed on every page of the blog. ?It?s all a little complicated and there?s a section devoted to the process.

Search Engine Optimization

Just about everyone has heard about search engine optimization by now. So I am going to skip the nitty-gritty details and just go over a few highlights.

Search engine optimization can be broken into 3 basic components:

  1. Keyword research
This was covered at great length in the above sections.
  2. On page optimization
You want your keyword phrase in your domain as well as your title tags, h1 tags, etc. (If any of this is new to you then go read?Your Grandma?s Guide To Search Engine Optimization and Keywords)
  3. Back link building
You need to have other websites link to your website because each link is like a vote. And the more votes you get the better. We will go more in depth into this in a later section.

Google Analytics Will Help

You really need to use Google analytics (or some other stat tracking software) to monitor how much traffic you get.

One of the best things about Google analytics is that it will show you how much traffic you are receiving for various keywords. And some keywords will end up sending you way more traffic than others. Your job is to figure out which keywords those are and then build more back links for those keywords.

Unfortunately most people using Google analytics don?t have the faintest idea how to analyze the data and use it to get more traffic. To help you? get the most out of Google analytics I?ve made several video tutorials:

Why Backlinks Matter

Imagine a house without windows. That is what your site is like without links. No one can see in if you do not have an opening into your world. The first thing you need to do is have people link to your site.

Think of links like votes. You want to be class president, you need votes. You want to be a congressperson, you need votes. Guess who gets to be the president. Yes, you got that right. The person with the most votes.

Guess who gets the visitors. Right, again. The site with the most incoming links.

Google Webmaster Tools Will Help With Backlink Building

Google Webmaster Tools is a free service designed by Google to help you get better rankings. ?Just?search Google for?google webmaster tools?and it should be the first search result. ?It will tell you:

  • How many links your site has
  • Which sites link to you the most
  • Where you rank in Google for various keywords

NoFollow vs. DoFollow

What is nofollow

Frequently blogs will receive lots of junk comments. The purpose of these comments is to get back links to someone?s website

To combat this sometimes blog owners will put a nofollow attribute in any links posted in comments.

An example of this:

<a href="http://www.mysite.com/" rel="nofollow">

See the part that says rel=?nofollow??

That?s the part that tells search engines not to follow this link.? When Google sees this it won?t follow this link and renders the link almost useless for search engine optimization.

So if you?re trying to get back links by posting comments on blogs your work may not get you the results you?re looking for if you post comments and links on blogs that use nofollow.

Not everyone uses nofollow

I would guess that most blogs online now use nofollow for links in their comments.? But there are a few who don?t use it.

For example I don?t use no follow for comments on this blog because I think it decreases comments and I have found other ways to deal with comment spam.

So when you?re looking to leave comments on blogs make sure that they are not using nofollow.

How to find blogs that use don?t use it

These blogs can be a pain to find so I have made a list of them here: Huge List Of DoFollow Blogs

Get the Firefox plug-in

It?s can be a major pain to comb through the HTML source code of a website to see if it uses nofollow or not.

Luckily there is a Firefox extension for this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5687

This extension makes it really easy to see which links are follow and which ones are nofollow.? It will turn all the links that are nofollow to a pink color and all other links to a purple color on a webpage.

Top Commentators Strategy

The Recipe

It is vitally important that you complete each step of the recipe. Here is the recipe to follow:

  1. Quick & Dirty Search Engine Optimization
  2. Social Bookmarking Made Easy
  3. Become A Top Commenter On Blogs
  4. Social Bookmark The Blogs
  5. More Ideas
  6. Consider Outsourcing

Each step of the recipe has its own section.

Quick & Dirty Search Engine Optimization

Before I get into building backlinks I want to say a quick word about search engine optimization. Optimizing your site will greatly increase the effectiveness of your backlink building efforts.

Keywords in domain
You must make sure that your keywords are in your domain. For example if your site is about poodle manicures then ideally your site would be PoodleMaincures.com or Poodle-Maincures.com

Keywords in title tags
You must make sure that your keywords are in your title tags. For example if your site is about poodle manicures then your title tags would look something like: <title>Poodle Manicures</title>

Keywords in h1 tags
You must make sure that your keywords are in your h1 tags. For example if your site is about poodle manicures then your h1 tags would look something like: <h1>Poodle Manicures</h1>

These are the basic things I recommend. To learn more about search engine optimization go to: http://nickstraffictricks.com/329_search-engine-optimization-and-keywords/

Social Bookmarking Made Easy

This is the hardest step in the whole process but it well worth your time.

Become A Top Commenter On Blogs

The basic idea
The basic idea is to find blogs that have the ?Top Commentator? widget installed. For example the blog QuickSprout ( http://www.quicksprout.com ) has this widget installed and you can see it on the right side of the main page:

The people with the most comments on the blog are rewarded with a link back to their own site. Looking at the list above you can see that Prostate Problems (8)has placed 8 comments and gets a free backlink. The best part is this widget is shown on every page of the blog. So every page of this blog has a backlink to Prostate Problems. But how many pages does this blog have? We can get a count by going to Google and searching for:

site:quicksprout.com

This blog has 193 pages! If you?re one of the top commenters of this site then your backlink appears on 193 pages. How cool is that?

A Quick Word About NoFollow
There has recently been a lot of discussion about NoFollow and if it really matters. (For an explanation of NoFollow and why it is important to go to: http://nickstraffictricks.com/1168_why-nofollow-matters-and-how-to-find-blogs-that-dont-use-it/)

Personally, I think the jury is still out on this. At this point I recommend becoming the top commentator only on blogs that do not use NoFollow. It certainly will not hurt you.

How to find these blogs

The toughest part of all of this is finding blogs with the top commentator widget and that are DoFollow. I spent several hours doing this and created a list of 30+blogs that have the top commentator widget and that are DoFollow and put the list at the bottom of this blog post.

Social Bookmark The Blogs

Once you are one of the top commentators on a blog your backlink will be on every one of their pages. Now you want the search engines to take notice. To do this you simply submit the blog?s home page or newest blog post to social bookmarking sites using OnlyWire. This should take about a minute of your time.

More Ideas

Another way to get a blog noticed by the search engine is to make a blogspot blog and on it link to all the blogs that now have backlinks to your site. Next submit the BlogSpot blog to OnlyWire.

Example
Let?s say you have a site called PoodleManicures.com and you have become the top commentator on blogs alpha.com and beta.com. You go to BlogSpot and signup for a free blog. To help the search engines index blogs alpha.com and beta.com (and see your backlinks) you place links to alpha.com and beta.com on your BlogSpot blog.

Next you submit your BlogSpot blog to OnlyWire. You can use this same strategy with Squidoo lenses too. To do this you simply go to squidoo.com and make a free Squidoo lens.

Next you link to blogs alpha.com and beta.com on your Squidoo lens.

Next you submit your Squidoo lens to OnlyWire. Doing this will help ensure that the search engines come index blogs alpha.com and beta.com and see the backlinks to your site.

Consider Outsourcing

As time goes on you and you make money I recommend you invest some of your profits and hire someone to help you with your work. A lot of people suggest using elance or guru.com. I recommend first tying to hire a friend or family member you trust.

Before You Begin Commenting?

Before you begin there are several things you need to be aware of:

  1. Leave good comments You must leave good & thoughtful comments on a blog.? If you leave spammy comments then the blog owner will delete them and they may ban you from making future comments. ?Join the?community?and contribute something.
  2. Be patient Some blogs require all comments to be approved by the blog owner before the comment shows up.? If this is the case then bookmark the page where you expect the comment to show up and revisit the page a day later.
  3. PageRank Changes I have sorted the blogs below according to PageRank.? PageRank does change periodically change and if one of the blogs below has a different PageRank then leave a comment at the bottom of this page.
  4. Consider Low PageRank Sites There is a lot more competition for the top commentator spots on blogs that have a high PageRank.? So you may want to start with blogs where it?s easy to become a top commentator.
  5. You may have to search The list of ?Top Commentators? is usually on the right side of the blog, but once in a while it?s at the very bottom of the blog.? You may have to spend a minute searching for it.

Here a bunch of blogs that have the Top Commentator Widget and are DoFollow

(Note:? Sometimes blogs change the widget to nofollow or they?ll remove the widget completely.)

43 Ways to Build Links

There are zillions of link building strategies. Some are very effective; some don?t do anything but waste your time; some will hurt your site?s rankings. Make sure you know the difference.

Great Link Building Methods

  1. Before you build any links?- You need to sign up for Google?s Webmaster Tools and know about anchor text varying, varying Domains & IP?s, and NoFollow vs. DoFollow.
  2. Keep a text file of your backlinks ? Not every site will accept your backlink and you need to track of which sites will accept your backlink.
  3. Spy on your competition ? Why re-invent the wheel and spend hours finding a few places to get?back links?when you could just look at the top 10 results for your keyword phrase and figure out where their?back links?come from?
  4. Blog roll ? Find other sites in your niche and add them to your blogroll. ?Invite those sites to add your site to their blogroll. ?If you have good content then some sites will add you. ?Sites with a lengthy blog roll are more likely to add you so target them first. ?Once added to their blog roll, your link will (usually) appear on every page of their site.
  5. Blog commenting ? Leaving meaningful comments on other blogs can be a great way to build backlinks. ?Read my lengthy ?How to? here. ?If you have trouble find blogs to comment on then checkout?Sneaky Way To Find Blogs To Comment On And Get Backlinks

For each person, include a summary explaining why this person is awesome and the reason that your readers should check out there website. Include a link to that person?s best blog post or article. Contact each person on the list and let them know what you?ve done. Some of them will link back to you or Tweet a link to your blog post.
  11. Let people steal your content ? When my blog first started getting traffic I noticed other sites were copying my blog posts without my permission. ?At first I was mad. ?And then I realized that one of my copied posts linked to another of my blog posts. ?The site that had copied my stuff was linking to my site. ?Read more:?My Clever Way To Handle Content Theft
  12. Awesome Titles & headlines -?People will never link to your next blog post if they don?t bother to read it. ?And they?ll never read it if you have a boring title. ?If you want backlinks, retweets, etc. then you MUST have an awesome title. ?(And when I say ?awesome? I actually mean ?not boring? like 90% of blog posts are). ?Be outrageous, be controversial, just don?t be boring. You cannot get backlinks with a lame title. Decent Link Building Methods

  1. Article Marketing?- 6 years ago article marketing was all the rage but now it?s lost some of it?s effectiveness. ?However there are some good posts that you can checkout if you want to learn about it:
    1. Article Marketing Basics

    3. Advanced Article Marketing
  2. Gov & Edu Links ? You can get quality links from sites that end in .edu or .gov. ?Read Ana Hoffman?s: ?3 Unorthodox Ways to Get King-Kong .EDU Links. ?The reason .edu & .gov links are considered decent but not great is that they are a pain to find. ?In the time it takes to find 1 .edu link you could find 5 other links.
  3. Paid Links ? You can buy links from various sites but it?s a hassle. ?You can go through a link broker service like text link brokers which makes this a lot easier. ?Make sure you?re aware of Google?s policy on paid links.
  4. Reciprocal links (Mediocre ?Method) ? You can swap links with random sites and link market makes it easy to find other sites to swap with.
  5. YouTube ? You can get a NoFollow link in the description of the video you post. ?Or you can find a popular video and pay the owner a few bucks to put your link in the description. ?Read:?5 Ways To Get Free YouTube Traffic
  6. Squidoo &?Hubspot ? Spend 5 minutes, make a page, and link to yourself.
  7. Onlywire ? Let?s you submit your url to something like 30 social networks at once.

Ineffective Link Building Methods
These won?t hurt your site?s ranking but won?t help much either.

  1. RSS Directories ? Submit your RSS feed to various RSS directories and get back links.
  2. Submit to Directories ? Submit your site to directories like DMOZ
  3. Fiverr deals ? They promise 5,000 back links for $5. ?You?ll likely get the back links but it?s doubtful that Google will see & count them.
  4. Begging ? Harass bloggers and ask them for a link and offer nothing in return.

Bad Link Building Methods (Avoid these!)

  1. Link Farms ? Great way to get your site blacklisted
  2. Blog comment spamming ? Many bloggers use Akismet which has a huge list of urls used by blog comment spammers. ?When you leave a spammy comment on a blog your url will likely be added to the Akismet list and all future comments will likely be discarded even if they?re?legitimate.
  3. Facebook page spamming ? People get angry when you slap your link on random Facebook pages. ?Often people will complain and get your account banned.

Domains & IP addresses matter

Getting 100 backlinks from 100 different domains is far better than getting 100 backlinks from 1 domain.

And getting backlinks from a variety of different IP addresses is even better! (Every computer connected to the Internet is assigned an IP address.)

For example, let?s say you use BlueHost to host your 20 domains. Most likely all of those domains will be on the same BlueHost server and have the same IP address. So you could have your 20 domains link to each other but this will be less effective because the domains are all on the same IP address.

Anchor text matters

Backlinks to your site are going to look something like this:

<a href="http://www.mysite.com/">Ballet Cats</a>

The part that says Ballet Cats is called the Anchor Text. You want to use the keyword phrase that you would like to rank for as the anchor text.

Q. Should I only use 1 keyword phrase in my links? anchor text only or vary them?

You should vary them, even if you only have 1 keyword phrase. ?Checkout?4 Backlink Building Tricks That Beat Panda & Penguin
