Stern to retire as NBA Commissioner in 2014

NEW YORK (AP) ? David Stern spent nearly 30 years growing the NBA, turning a league that couldn't even get its championship series on live prime-time TV into a projected $5 billion a year industry.

Confident the NBA is in good shape and certain he has found someone who can make it even better, Stern is ready to end one of the most successful and impactful careers in sports history.

Stern will retire as commissioner Feb. 1, 2014, 30 years to the day after taking charge of the league, and be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.

"I decided that things are in great shape and there's an organization in place that will ultimately be led by Adam that is totally prepared to take it to the next level," Stern said Thursday during a press conference following the league's board of governors meeting.

It's hard to be any better than Stern, perhaps the model sports commissioner.

Name an important policy in the NBA ? drug testing, salary cap, even a dress code ? and Stern had a hand in it. A lawyer by trade, he was a fearless negotiator against players and referees, but also their biggest defender any time he felt they were unfairly criticized.

"For all the things you've done for the NBA and for sports generally, I think there's no doubt that you'll be remembered as the best of all-time as commissioners go and you've set the standard, I think not even just for sports league commissioners, but for CEOs in any industry," Silver told Stern sitting to his left on a podium.

Stern told owners of his plans during their two days of meetings, and the board unanimously decided Silver would be his successor. Owners will begin negotiations with the 50-year-old Silver in hopes of having a contract completed by their next meeting in April.

Stern, who turned 70 last month, became commissioner on Feb. 1, 1984. He has been the NBA's longest-serving commissioner, establishing the league's brand around the world, presiding over team expansion and overseeing the establishment of the WNBA and the NBA Development League.

"There is no debate that David Stern has earned his spot in the pantheon of sports commissioners. Deservedly, his name and reputation will always be synonymous with the phenomenal growth and success of the NBA over the last three decades," union executive director Billy Hunter said in a statement. "His absence will surely be felt by anyone connected to the NBA and the sport of basketball, although clearly the league will be left in very capable hands with the appointment of Adam Silver as the next commissioner."

Seven franchises have been added under Stern and the league has seen a 30-fold increase in revenues. Stern insisted the NBA have a presence on social media, and the league and players have more than 270 million likes and followers on Facebook and Twitter.

"There are all kinds of other business metrics we could look at that would define David as one of the great business leaders of our time," Silver said.

Stern said he decided on his plans about six months ago, having guided the league through a lockout that ended nearly a year ago. He didn't want to leave until the labor deal was completed or until he was confident there was a successor in place, and both are done. Silver has been the league's No. 2 since 2006, and both Stern and league owners praise his abilities.

"I don't know what else to say other than to recite what I told the owners yesterday in executive session," Stern said. "I told them that it's been a great run, it will continue for another 15 months, that the league is in, I think, terrific condition."

Stern is the one who got it there, taking over what was a second-rate league with little-to-no TV presence ? the NBA Finals were on tape delay in the early 1980s ? and making basketball one of the world's most popular sports.

"A couple of things that stand out to me is that David has been, in my estimation, the type of commissioner that has set the standard not only for the NBA but for all of the sports," said Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, the outgoing chairman of the board of governors. "We have done so many wonderful things in the organization. The marketing, leadership, the brand recognition, going international way before our times, and David has led that."

Taylor said there's been a "40-fold" increase in revenues from the league's national TV contract, and that the average player salary will have had grown from $250,000 when Stern took over to $5 million by the end of the current collective bargaining agreement.

Stern was the league's outside counsel from 1966-78, then its general counsel before becoming executive vice president of business and legal affairs from 1980-84. He replaced Larry O'Brien to become the league's fourth commissioner, getting a boost in taking the game mainstream with the popularity of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, and soon Michael Jordan. The league began marketing its stars, and Stern found the desire for them was greatest in some far-away lands.

The real explosion came in 1992, when those three headed the Dream Team that led the U.S. to the Olympic basketball gold medal while winning fans around the world. The NBA has gone on to play games in 17 countries, staging 114 international games.

"He's done a remarkable job," Major League Baseball Commission Bud Selig said at the World Series. "To think of what the NBA was when he came in and what it is today, most people judge him very very highly."

There were rough patches, particularly the brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans in 2004, and the betting scandal involving former referee Tim Donaghy. Stern had already passed off most of the heavy lifting to Silver by last year, but he was the one absorbing the criticism during the lockout for the second shortened season in his tenure.

He sometimes appeared worn down during the negotiations, even missing one critical bargaining session while sick, but insists he's got plenty of energy to keep working now.

"I feel great," Stern said. "I'm enjoying my job, but I'm looking forward to doing some other things. I'm stepping down, I'm not retiring."

Stern just recently returned from China, Germany and Italy, and plans another overseas trip next season, and will remain an adviser to the league in retirement on international matters.

"We just think that his leadership will be important to our future," Taylor said.

It's meant everything to the league's past.

The league has reported huge increases in ticket and merchandise sales, and TV ratings are at an all-time high. Last season's lockout, the second time the league lost games to a work stoppage, hardly made a dent in the league's business or in fans' interest.

But even for Stern, business has always taken a back seat to basketball. He's sought changes to improve play, such as the elimination of isolation play that bored him, to implementing penalties that go into effect this season for flopping.

"For the most part it's been a series of extraordinary experiences and enormous putting together of pieces of a puzzle and it goes on forever," Stern said. "And there will always be another piece of the puzzle and so the question is at what point do you decide that, let someone else do it? That's the point that I'm at now."

Taylor and Spurs owner Peter Holt, who is replacing him as board chairman, said the owners will work to have a contract with Silver by April. Silver came to the NBA 20 years ago and served a variety of positions before becoming the deputy commissioner in 2006. He was the lead negotiator during the lockout and Stern has relied more heavily on him in recent years, even turning to Silver to answer questions on tougher topics.

Stern said he wouldn't leave until he knew there was a successor ready, and he has repeatedly said Silver is ready for that role. Stern said he would always remain available to take a call and help the league.

"Life is a journey and it's been a spectacular journey," Stern said. "Each step along the way there are things that you have to do, things that you maybe wish you hadn't done. But I don't keep that list, and so I'm totally pleased and I'm particularly pleased with the transition of which we're now embarking."

To Search Is Human, To Find Is Divine

As humans, we have always sought to answer our questions. Prior to the inception of the Internet and the rise of the search engine, we had a limited array of solutions when a question arose.

We could ask teachers or friends, and as you might imagine, this was a local and inefficient means to securing an exhaustive answer. We were not entirely without our systems, which in their time proved quite useful. One such system was the Dewey decimal system known well as the information retrieval of our public libraries. When it came to speed, accuracy and efficiency, this system was not without its limits.

Enter search engines. Never before have we had such rapid means to answer our questions as with a search engine. Walt Disney said once that ?We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we?re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.? Search enables us to fulfill our curiosity and helps us to navigate to our answers.

Why Should Your Customer Find You?

So why is this important for your B2B search marketing? Its importance points to an often overlooked dimension in the way we think of search. Search means so much more to all of us than we tend to think of in our everyday marketing lives.

To be truly successful and positioned for the future, we need to think about where search fits into the human journey, both in what people want to find and what you have a right to deliver.

I find it useful at times to take a step back and question even the approach of what we are trying to do as marketers. One element in B2B marketing is that we are always pressed to find the appropriate blend of tactics to most effectively meet our objectives.

But ask yourself, how often do we stop and think about why customers should be selecting your business in their lives?

The answer is certainly a varied one, but really getting into the roots of this core foundation can lead to key discoveries which will help you make the connections with your consumers. While it?s often too difficult to simply stop what we are currently executing, one way to invest this time appropriately is when there is an emerging trend and an opportunity converges with future demand.

Viewing Market Trends To Inform Search Strategy

I am often pleasantly surprised when a growth trend can help inform search strategy for my clients. As an example, let?s look at the realm of B2B e-commerce, the often overlooked cousin of retail e-commerce.

According to a recent Oracle Whitepaper (2012 B2B E-Commerce Survey: Results and Trends, Feb 2012), business to business revenue transacted online is approximately US$300 billion.

A separate study conducted by Forrester conservatively estimates that B2B e-commerce will be a $559 billion market in the US in 2013 (Key Trends In B2B eCommerce For 2013). I think it is safe to say the B2B e-commerce is poised for a major growth spurt, and this fact alone inspires us to think about how to prepare for this in our search campaigns.

What we can safely draw from this is the reality that something is moving B2B customers into a different behavior from offline to online. It could be the link between the speed of access and ability to transact more efficiently at scale that you find online. But no matter the reason, as a B2B search marketer, the question then becomes how you prepare for this potential in your business.

One of the key trends that the Forrester report goes on to identify is that ?B2C e-commerce experiences drive the B2B e-commerce experience.?

In essence, B2B buyers want to have similar experiences to what they have seen in their lives as retail purchasers. While the decision to build the B2B e-commerce experience might be out of your control in search, we can begin to examine what has worked in B2C and how we can apply this to lay the foundation in our campaigns.

For example, a program that is already ahead of this curve can be seen below. As you can see, the client is enabling a retail-like experience, but also provides three means with which to connect to the audience, including chat, click-to-call, and email.? This enables not only the query fulfillment of the end user, but also creates an internal business optimization opportunity. The client is able to identify the most?effective?communication channel through customer?selection. This will help determine when a sale can be automated or when some human intervention is required.

Through this approach, a B2B sales organization can create a foundation to inform managing every transaction collaboratively with the customer.

If we then take this data, and build it into our search campaigns, we can extend this experience in the search journey through click-to-call ad copy or other extensions. When we do, we are assuring that our customers have a choice in how they find and engage with us.

Are You Available When & How Your Customer Wants To Find You?

In the end, the foundation is always about your Findability. Woody Allen once said that 80% of success is just showing up.

Do you feel that in your B2B search campaign, across your customer personas, you are available at least 80% of the time? One area to examine closely is in mobile, another key trend that Forrester calls out as important to B2B e-commerce success. The same Forrester study goes on to cite that products distributor W.W. Grainger reported recently that nearly 50% of its mobile customers said they ?feel comfortable enough to start placing orders? on a mobile device.

Furthermore, 55% of information workers use multiple devices for work, while 58% of those information workers who work remotely at least once a month use a smartphone regularly for work. We have all witnessed the explosion in mobile, and now any search campaign that is not building mobile as a separate campaign dimension is missing tremendous opportunity to be found.

Ask yourself how easily can your customers find and engage with you, and why should they? If you have any doubts, or a plethora of explanations come to mind, then perhaps your search program should explore what your end customers need you as the search ambassador to do for them.

The reason this is so important is that whether you plan for it or not, your customers are curious and looking for answers, even at this moment. By virtue of our human curiosity, search is and will remain a highly valuable method for marketing results since it?s in and of itself a human behavior. If they seek to find, and you provide them the answer they need, the results to your B2B search program will reflect your success.

Teenagers must act on an endless parade of choices. Some choices, including smoking, come with serious consequences. As a result, adolescents often find themselves trapped between their impulsive tendencies (Just try it!) and their newfound ability to make well-informed and logical choices (Wait, maybe that?s not such a good idea!).

So what makes the teenager?s brain so complex? What drives adolescents ? more than any other age group ? to sometimes make rash or questionable decisions? By peering into the brains of teenagers, scientists who study brain development have begun uncovering answers.

Breast cancer cells enticed to spread by 'tumorous environment' as well as genetic changes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A new study from Johns Hopkins researchers suggests that the lethal spread of breast cancer is as dependent on a tumor's protein-rich environment as on genetic changes inside tumor cells.

In a report in the Sept. 25 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the scientists conclude that a molecular signal in the protein meshwork surrounding the breast cancer cells may provide the critical trigger to initiate the life-threatening process of metastasis to distant sites in the body.

Moreover, their experiments suggest that the environment surrounding a tumor can even coax healthy breast cells to invade surrounding tissue just as cancer cells do, and that a healthy environment can cause cancer cells to stay put and not spread as they usually do.

"The most dangerous aspect of breast cancer is its ability to spread to distant sites, and most tumors are initially unable to do that," says Andrew Ewald, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell biology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and member of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences' Center for Cell Dynamics. Learning more specifically what triggers metastases may provide additional targets for preventing and treating the malignant process that causes cancer deaths, Ewald adds.

It's widely accepted that cancers acquire the ability to spread through the gradual accumulation of genetic changes, and experiments have also shown that these changes occur in parallel with changes in the protein content and 3-dimensional patterning of the protein meshwork that creates their immediate surroundings. What has been unclear is whether those immediate surroundings play a role in initiating and encouraging cancer's spread, or whether they are more "effect" then "cause."

To sort out the contributions of both the genetic changes and the environment, Ewald's team separated tumor cells from their surroundings by taking fragments of human breast tumors and embedding them in two different commercially available 3-D gels, one that mimics the protein meshwork surrounding healthy mammary tissue and another that mimics tumorous mammary tissue.

The gels are tools often used to study tumor invasiveness. The first was made of proteins that normally create a thin layer around healthy breast tissue, acting as a molecular boundary for it. The second was made entirely of a protein, collagen I, which is found in unusually high concentrations around breast tumors.

If cancer cells are driven to disperse solely because of the genetic changes they carry, the researchers expected to see the tumor fragments behave similarly in both the healthy and tumorous environments. What they saw instead, says Ewald, was a distinct difference. As expected, 88 percent of tumor fragments sent cells crawling into the tumorous meshwork environment, the first step in metastasis known as dissemination. But only 15 percent of tumor fragments sent cells crawling into the normal environment. According to Ewald, these results indicate that the environment around a tumor plays a more direct role in cancer spread than previously thought.

If indeed cells can be enticed outward by the protein environment, the researchers reasoned, that environment might even be powerful enough to coax cells away from healthy breast tissue. To test this idea, they took fragments of both healthy and cancerous mouse mammary glands and placed them in the collagen I gels mimicking a tumor's environment. Results show that in the tumorous environment, nearly as many of the healthy fragments sent cells dispersing as did the tumorous fragments. One notable difference shown in their time-lapse videos was that healthy cells only exited the normal tissue fragments for a short period of time, while cancer cells continued to exit the tumor fragments throughout the whole test period.

To learn why healthy cells stopped exiting normal tissue fragments sooner, the researchers analyzed the proteins on the cells that were in direct contact with the meshwork gels. In breast tissue, a thin protein layer normally forms a boundary between cells and their environment. When both healthy and tumorous tissue fragments were surgically removed prior to the experiments, this boundary was disrupted, allowing breast cells to directly contact the protein meshwork beyond the boundary. In healthy mammary gland fragments, the team found that the "self-corrective behavior" coincided with the re-creation of this protein boundary.

"This tells us that tumors continue to listen to their environments," Ewald says. "Our data suggest that tumors with genetic changes that favor cancer spread may not disperse until they are within a permissive environment." A dispersal-permissive environment is enough to provoke invasive behavior in all mammary tissue, healthy and cancerous, Ewald explains, and the difference between the two can be a single genetic change that allows the dispersal to continue unchecked.

Other authors of the report include Kim-Vy Nguyen-Ngoc, Kevin Cheung, Eliah Shamir and Ryan Gray from The Johns Hopkins University; Audrey Brenot and Zena Werb from the University of California, San Francisco; and William Hines and Paul Yaswen from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The research was supported by the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and by grants from the National Cancer Institute (R01CA056721, R01CA138818, U01CA155758, U54CA151838, P50CA88843), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (U01ES019458) and the Safeway Foundation Award for Breast Cancer Research.

Happy Birthday Matilda Bear! | My Home Truths

7 years ago today, almost to the time of the publication of this post, our first daughter was born. Her arrival was early, fast and full of drama ? she was (literally) born to make a dramatic entrance.

Some of her birth items ? a tiny premmie dress (she only weighed 5lb born and was too small for 00000!), the measuring tape used in hospital and the felt blindfold used when she underwent phototherapy for jaundice.

And the drama has not diminished in the intervening years.

For my daughter is a girl of extremes. Extreme joy turns into extreme despair many times in the course of a day. There is no in-between. There are no shades of grey. She is intense, emotional, demonstrative and craves individual attention. She cares deeply for others and is loyal and true.

Matilda is strong. She is strong physically and mentally, when it comes to things that she really wants.

But she is vulnerable too. While she is strong she is not especially resilient but she is working hard to build up her emotional reserves and better face disappointment.

Matilda is musical. She loves singing and dancing and playing on the piano. Obviously, she also loves drama ? her brother often complains that she is using her ?adult hands? again when she gets caught up in telling us a tale.

She is imaginative. Her stories are fantastical and her ability to see the potential in everyday objects to make craft items is uncanny.

Matilda loves to play games. It doesn?t matter whether it?s a board game, card game or video game, she loves nothing more than to play a game with someone.

She is definitely her father?s daughter and enjoys inspecting his models and checking out his newly constructed terrain for tabletop wargames.

Matilda is happiest with her family. She does not always like staying with others or straying too far away from home at night. Home is definitely where the heart is for her.

She loves school and learning and applying what she knows to her life. Last week she asked me to set up PowerPoint document for her and she proceeded to make some slides on ?people in the community?!

Matilda loves demonstrating what she knows and is always the first to raise her hand to answer a question, anytime, anywhere.

She longs to have a dog of her own and is currently weighing up the pros and cons of different breeds and researching what she needs to do look after one.

For a 7 year old Matilda is not very worldly and still loves ponies and fairies and teddies and dollies and lego and play jewellery and bags.

Some of Matilda?s favourite things -?I hope she can hold onto being a little girl for a few years yet.

I love you my Matilda Bear ? you have lit up my life since the moment you arrived and I never fail to be amused, entertained and amazed at your energy, your drive and your theatrics.

    Earthquake experts condemn manslaughter verdict

Seismologists are condemning a manslaughter verdict for six Italian scientists and one government official accused of being too reassuring about the risk of an earthquake prior to a deadly temblor in 2009.

The researchers, all far from Italy, used words like "unfair," "incredible" and "ridiculous" in discussing the verdict, which comes after a yearlong trial in L'Aquila, Italy.

"I think it's very unfair and very stupid," said Seth Stein, an earth scientist at Northwestern University in Illinois. "It reflects a kind of fundamental misunderstanding of what science can and can't do."

Related: Scientists convicted of manslaughter after quake

After a series of small temblors in early 2009, the six seismologists and the government official held a public meeting in which they said it was "unlikely" that the shaking foreshadowed a larger quake. Days later, on April 6, 2009, a 6.3-magnitude quake struck, crumbling L'Aquila's medieval buildings and killing 309 people. [ Photos: Destruction in L'Aquila ]

    Natural disasters on trial
Prosecutors charged that the researchers were too blas? about the risk and asked for four years' jail time for manslaughter for each. Today (Oct. 22), Judge Marco Billi took about four hours to find the defendants guilty, sentencing them to six years apiece. An appeal is likely.

However, earthquake experts said the scientists had been unfairly scapegoated for failing to predict the unpredictable.

"It's too easy to predict an earthquake after the fact and say everyone should have cleared out, but beforehand people, for good reason, thought the risk was low," said John Vidale, a University of Washington seismologist. In fact, Vidale said, the scientists' statements that the quake was unlikely were true.

"There was a very small chance of that earthquake," Vidale told LiveScience. "It didn't make sense for people to evacuate."

Other researchers objected to blaming scientists for civil evacuation decisions.

"The idea is ridiculous, to hold scientists responsible for public policy," said Chris Goldfinger, a professor of geology and geophysics at Oregon State University. "First, scientists have almost zero ability to predict earthquakes, and second, have no direct responsibility for public policy. Something has gone seriously wrong in the Italian legal system."??

Many large earthquakes are preceded by small foreshocks, but there's no way to know when a small quake foreshadows a larger one, seismologists say. One 1998 study of Italian earthquakes found that only 2 percent of small clusters of quakes predicted a large shock.

Evacuation is typically not the best response to these small swarms, according to a 2010 article published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. That study found the likelihood of death for citizens in L'Aquila's least-safe buildings was still only about one in 100,000 ? a risk that's better ameliorated by retrofitting dangerous buildings than evacuating entire towns for indeterminate lengths of time on the slight chance of a quake, the researchers concluded. (No charges have been brought in L'Aquila regarding building codes or standards.)

    Fallout from the verdict
Italy's system for communicating earthquake risk before the trial was imperfect, seismologists contacted by LiveScience agreed. Risk communication tended toward the informal, and defendant Bernardo De Bernardinis, then-deputy chief of Italy?s Civil Protection Department, responded to a reporter's query regarding whether town residents should relax about the earthquakes with a glass of wine by suggesting a vintage.

      4. Earthquake experts condemn manslaughter verdict

Nevertheless, researchers said the assessment of risk as low was an accurate assessment, and feared that the criminal verdict might put a damper on future communication improvements. The verdict is also likely to make it harder for Italy to attract top geoscientists, Vidale said.?

Related: Scientists convicted of manslaughter after quake

"We know that the system in Italy for communicating risk before the L'Aquila earthquake was flawed, but this verdict will cast a pall over any attempt to set up a better one. I'm afraid that many scientists are learning to keep their mouths shut," Thomas Jordan, an earth scientist at the University of Southern California and the director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, told LiveScience. "This won't help those of us who are trying to improve how risks from natural hazards are communicated between scientists and the public." [ Natural Disasters: Top U.S. Threats ]

Jordan was a member of a commission convened by the Italian government after the L'Aquila earthquake to improve quake communication. The recommendations, submitted before the L'Aquila trial began, include open sources of scientific information for the public, rigorous earthquake forecasting data, and communication methods approved as effective by social science research.

The key to communicating risk about natural disasters, researchers agreed, is to let the public know what scientists don't know.

"The real problem is helping people understand how risk works," Erik Klemetti, a geoscientist at Denison University in Ohio, told LiveScience. "You can't expect that scientists can come in and tell people 'an earthquake will happen here on October 28, 2013.' Instead, they must understand that there is an increased probability of earthquakes or eruptions in certain areas ? and that they must take responsibility for understanding the risks of where they live."

Hot Topics in the Small Business Community: Olympic buzz ...

    Olympics creating business (1)

Wasn?t the Olympics magnificent? Wasn?t it grand? Wasn?t it beneficial for every small business out there?

According to some, most notably this post, believed that the Olympics helped start-ups to grow and flourish. Livesheets used the Olympics as a springboard to boast about its crowd flow model. It was the most detailed and complex one ever build for a sports event. It was built in Excel and gave it the simplicity it required.

    Not bad going, eh?

Livesheets is just one of many extraordinary cases that benefitted from London 2012. It provided a timely extra boost to the country?s economy and the capital?s infrastructure. Start-ups, like Livesheets, had to carefully identify a niche in the market, and those that did, did it successfully.

The Games provided great opportunities for small businesses.

    ?

There?s been much talk and focus about entrepreneurs and small business owners failing to reach their potential. However, before sounding like a poor football pundit, there?s help available.

No one has ever said that being an entrepreneur is easy. Creating your own destiny and career path is tricky and hard-work ? succeeding in this lifestyle seems to require an elusive mix of traits.

There are many reasons why some entrepreneurs make it big, while others flounder. Later this week, this blog will give you a run down and supply helpful tips why small business owners aren?t reaching their potential?

After all, most entrepreneurs are intelligent folk. They are hardworking and usually at the top of their profession. However, some of these smart people go from thriving in the workplace to struggle in maintaining the success of a small business.

Make sure you look out for that one. It will be a cracker.

    #WebSummit in Dublin (1)

Following last week?s post of the value of attending conferences, there was a Web Summit in Dublin. Did that provide any value? According to our good friend Twitter and the hashtag #WebSummit, it does. Makes that post look rather silly now, doesn?t it?

The papers labelled it as ?Impressive?, ?Extraordinary? and ?Top of the Pile?, making last week?s blog post look even sillier.

With over 200 international speakers and over 3000 attendees from 50+ countries, it provides a good basis from seasoned CEOs to start-up entrepreneurs and everything in-between.

More interestingly for this blog, there were 250 start-ups from over the world exhibiting in the Start-up Village. Very cool, indeed.

Did you attend? Was it interesting?

Gain More Muscle With This Bodybuilding Advice | Somanabolic

TIP! Always adhere to proper technique and form when lifting weights. Just picking up a weight and lifting it without focusing on good form can create a serious injury.

Improving the way you live involves time and dedication, along with becoming educated. It?s the same with muscle development. You will have to have the correct tools so that you are successful. This article is filled with ways to build up your muscles ? feel free to try some out today.

TIP! Find a good protein supplement you can include in making energy shakes. Because your protein requirements during the mass-building process are so high, you may find it easier to consume your protein in the form of shakes or smoothies, rather than eating too much meat or dozens of eggs.

Make sure you are eating food that supports your workout schedule. It is important to consume plenty of protein and limit your fat intake when you are trying to build muscle. This does not mean you should eat more food; this means you should have a more balanced diet. Try using vitamins and supplements to build muscle.

TIP! Listen to experts if you want to build a quality program for building muscle mass. By learning from a professional, you will have a leg up on the competition, building a strong foundation for success.

Meat is very helpful for building up your muscles. Try to eat about 1 gram of protein packed meat for every pound that is on your body. This is important because it allows you to store a protein reserve that your body will be able to use to build muscle.

TIP! If muscle-building is your goal, a good diet is required. There are nutrients your body needs to rebuild muscles in the body.

Start keeping a training log. It is crucial to keep track of your progress when you are working on building muscle. You can use a fitness log to do this. When you are working out, make sure you write down what exercises you did and how many reps you completed. You will stay motivated once you see how far you?ve come.

    Muscle Mass

TIP! Alcohol should not be consumed when you?re in muscle building mode. A beer here and there, or a little bit of wine is okay, but alcohol should never be drank in excess.

You should always set goals that are realistic when attempting to increase muscle mass. Remember that it will take a lot of time and effort to reach your ultimate goal. You can do more harm that good if you attempt to build up muscle mass fast by using steroids, stimulants or other harmful substances.

TIP! Before you start a muscle-building workout, you need to load up on protein. Before doing your workouts, consume about twenty grams of whey protein.

Avoid rapidly boosting your protein intake immediately after you begin your new workout plan. Starting too soon will increase your caloric intake as well, leading to fat deposits. Increase your protein gradually as you increase the intensity of your weightlifting exercises.

TIP! Always remember to eat prior to and after working out. If you are just getting started with your body building, try some high quality protein food.

You must always remember to stretch for 10 minutes before starting a routine for weight lifting. This helps warm up your muscles prior to lifting any heavy weights. An additional advantage of preventing injuries is that you can spend more time working out instead of recovering.

TIP! Completely utilize creatine in order to achieve optimum muscle growth. Creatine adds muscle size and increases strength by as much as ten pounds in the first few weeks, just by allowing you to work harder and longer.

Some people mistakenly emphasize speed over technique while working out. You?ll always get better results if you complete repetitions slowly and correctly, rather than if you try to get your reps done too fast. Do not rush, and be sure to properly do these exercises.

TIP! When trying to build muscle, do not cut good fats out of your diet. Good fats, like Omega-3 fatty acids, are essential to proper muscle growth.

Compound exercises may be the key to maximizing your muscle-building results and getting the most out of your workouts. The theory behind these exercises is that you should use a variety of muscles during one exercise. A great example of a compound exercise is bench pressing. This exercise works your triceps, chest and shoulders all at the same time.

TIP! Concentrate on deadlifts, squats and bench presses. These exercises are commonly considered the foundation of a successful bodybuilder?s program and there are good reasons for this.

Developing good technique is the most important factor in weight lifting, ahead of speed, frequency of exercise or even how much weight is used. Each individual aspect of your routine needs considerable practice until mastered completely. Master a new exercise by practicing it with lighter weights first. This can lead to better results in the long run.

    Muscle Mass

TIP! It is crucial that you never avoid breakfast, particularly when trying to create muscles. A high-protein but healthy breakfast will help you get your body started for the day.

Attempting a muscle building program while involved in difficult cardiovascular workouts or training for an upcoming marathon is not recommended. While engaging in cardio exercise is key to good health, it can negate the work you do on your muscle mass. When you are trying to build up your muscle mass, concentrate more on your strength exercises and a little less on conditioning.

TIP! When you are building muscle, you need to work your muscles to exhaustion on your final set. You need to exercise until you literally are unable to finish the rep in the set you?re working on.

You must restrict weekly workouts to no more than four. This allows your muscles to repair and rebuild themselves with a bit of rest. When you workout too much, you can make your body overwork itself and not build muscles and get into shape properly, so you won?t get the results you?re seeking.

TIP! If you start to feel pain, it is important that you immediately stop your workout. It is easy to injure your muscles and tendons, so don?t push yourself too hard just to build muscle.

In order to succeed in anything in life, knowing what tools to use and the proper way to do it is key. It all holds true with muscle development as well. Use what you have found in this article to enhance your workouts, and you will soon achieve bigger muscles.
