Gary Lineker and Lord Alan Sugar debate Gareth Bale transfer on Twitter

Lineker and Lord Sugar debate Bale transfer on Twitter
In no-man?s land: Tottenham?s Gareth Bale (Picture: PA)

Ex-Tottenham striker Gary Lineker and former chairman Lord Alan Sugar have been locked in a Twitter debate over Real Madrid?s reported ?86million offer for Gareth Bale.

The Welsh winger was the subject of a world record offer from the Spaniards, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is understood to be sticking to his guns and refusing to sell his prized asset at any price.

Levy?s stance is believed to have infuriated Bale, but it has also become the subject of fierce debate on social networks, with fans and commentators split over the dilemma facing the Spurs chief.

Unsurprisingly, former player Lineker has backed Levy?s footballing decision to reject a bid for his star player, whereas Sugar argued the business perspective.

Sensing an increased chance of Bale leaving White Hart Lane this summer, Lineker tweeted: ?The slight shift in AVB?s rhetoric makes me think @GarethBale11 may be on his Spanish bike sometime soon.?

To which Sugar replied: ?Maybe you?re right but honestly if RM (Real Madrid) are offering ?81m dont you think its good biz to take it.?

Lineker said: ?Only for the club?s coffers. Losing your best player is never good business. Sends out all the wrong signals.?

Sugar countered: ?Well of course for the clubs coffers. But we are talking 81m that?s not peanuts and no one player is worth that.

?U know if a player wants to go. He?ll go. Sol Campbell was free agent so Arsenal could pay him massive money and no transfer fee.?

Free Software Foundation drives fundraising effort for 'fully free' Replicant Android fork

Free Software Foundation drives fundraising effort for 'fully free' Replicant Android fork

Android variants come in various guises, some liberating, some a bit cheeky, and others, entirely free. Free, as in free to you, and free from any kind of licensing issues -- and Replicant is one such example. The project has been around since 2010, but a new fundraising initiative by the Free Software Foundation promises to give it a vital boost. The key difference with Replicant and many other Android spin-offs is that it doesn't rely on proprietary software for it to play nice with vendor hardware. While most of Android is free, it's at this hardware interface level that things get a bit more complex. The FSF hopes that by driving investment towards Replicant more hardware can be supported, in turn opening the OS up to even more users. Sound like something you can get behind? Head over to the source and show your support.

Sony loaning out PS4 dev kits to developers free of charge for a year

A number of sources have stated on Polygon that some developers aren't paying a cent to use the PlayStation 4 development kit.

The dev kit itself costs about $2,500, but Sony is loaning them out for free for a period of one year, according to the company's "Become a Registered Developer" website. Various development sources on the article said that no dev kits have been sold as of yet. "All the indies I know got them for free," said one developer. "Sony has been amazing about kits and development thus far." Another developer stated that the company is "handing them out like candy".

A Sony spokesperson pointed out that the act of self-publishing was available on PlayStation platforms for over five years. "With self-publishing, we keep things really flexible for developers and give them lots of options, including funding through the Pub Fund, which is back-end funding paid upon completion of the game, we waive patch fees for indies and all digital titles and we embrace new business models like F2P, episodic, and subscriptions. We've had more than 500 games self-published on PSN."

Previously, PlayStation 3 dev kits cost between $1,000 and $10,000 with different levels of debug functionality and pricing. Sony will not be changing its self-publishing processes at this point in time.

Huawei runs David Cameron's preferred porn-filtering system, just FYI

David Cameron's preferred pornfiltering system is run by Huawei, just FYI

Authorities in the UK have never had quite the same level of anxiety over Huawei that we've witnessed in the US, and they've so far been happy to let the Chinese firm get involved with numerous parts of the country's data infrastructure. As it turns out, the company's control even extends to the "Homesafe" filter used by internet service provider TalkTalk, which David Cameron recently praised during his push for tighter controls on adult content. The BBC discovered that UK-based Huawei employees are able to decide which sites are blocked on TalkTalk's service, and that even users who opt out of Homesafe have their internet usage data routed through Huawei's system. Whether or not this is an issue depends entirely on how much you trust reports of close ties between Huawei and the Chinese government, versus Huawei's claim that these concerns are based on anti-Chinese prejudice rather than evidence. From a purely practical point of view, however, if the mission is to block off huge swathes of the internet, why wouldn't you hire an expert?

JOHN LYNCH: It?s time for baseball to regain honor and integrity

Where is Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis when he is needed?

In baseball?s darkest hour, the Chicago White Sox, under the grip of Chicago mobsters, threw the 1919 World Series in the infamous ?Black Sox scandal.? Eight White Sox players were first found innocent by a Chicago jury of their peers.

The players believed they had beaten the system and celebrations went on for days in that toddling town, Chicago. But the integrity of the game had been damaged and the owners felt it was time for action.

In 1920, they hired a federal judge, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, and gave him unlimited powers under the best interests of the game provision. The players were stunned when the judge suspended the eight for life. The league took note and gambling was eliminated from the game.

Baseball?s integrity is under assault again as the PED scandal has reached a boiling point. The National League?s 2011 MVP, Ryan Braun, has recently been suspended for 65 games. But after a nice vacation, he will come back with nearly $120 million remaining on his contract. Melkey Cabrera tested positive last year and was banished for 50 games, but was rewarded with a huge contract in free agency over the offseason.

There are some 20 players implicated in the Tony Bosch and Biogenesis PED scandal, including, the worst of all, Alex Rodriguez.

A-Rod has lied and cheated his way into a massive payday and has earned hundreds of millions through his deceit.

Baseball has a huge problem. The fans will no longer tolerate cheats, and finally the clean players are speaking up against the scumbags who use PEDs.

My family has first-hand experience with players who use PEDs and the impact upon those who don?t. My younger son Ryan was a left-handed pitcher at UCLA and was drafted by the Twins. He pitched in the minor leagues for four years, was Rule 5 drafted by the Orioles and then traded to the Padres. Ryan was moving up and closer to the big leagues when he hurt his shoulder and had surgery for a rotator cuff tear.

He rehabbed diligently over the offseason and then went to spring training with the Padres. Another left-handed pitcher, who will remain nameless, also had surgery. During the offseason he added 40 pounds and his fastball speed increased from 87 to 94 mph. With his surgically repaired shoulder, Ryan was having difficulty topping out at 87.

Nonetheless, Ryan had a good spring training with zero earned runs, but he was still recovering. Having been in Double-A, he was confident the Padres were going to move him up to Triple-A. When the assignments were doled out, he was held back for an ?extended spring? because he wasn?t throwing over 90. In fact, the Padres had a ?genius? who was supervising the Padres? minor league system, and his edict was: They only advanced players throwing above 90.

The other left-handed pitcher was sent to Triple-A and was brought up by the Padres that season. He returned for parts of the next year and his body broke down with a series of shoulder and other injuries. His career was over.

Service sector helps UK economy grow 0.6 pct in Q2

LONDON (AP) ? The British economy grew by 0.6 percent in the first quarter compared with the previous three months, largely on the back of a strong performance by the services sector.

The increase as reported by the Office for National Statistics was double the previous quarter's rate but in line with market expectations.

The quarterly performance will likely give the UK government a bit of breathing space amid ongoing criticism over its tough austerity policies. Critics say that despite the improvement in overall growth, many people in Britain are failing to see an improvement in their living standards.

The International Monetary Fund has suggested that the government might want to reconsider the pace of its austerity measures to help the economy, whose output was worth 1.4 trillion pounds ($2.1 trillion) in 2012.

(AP) ? The little prince was in need of a name, and now, by George, he's got one.

Make that three: George Alexander Louis.

The announcement Wednesday that Prince William and his wife, Kate, had selected a moniker steeped in British history came as royal officials said the new parents were seeking quiet family time away from the flashbulbs and frenzy that accompanied the birth of their first child.

While the news put to rest intense speculation over what name the couple would choose, the extreme interest around it illustrated how the 2-day-old future heir is already on his way to a lifetime of fanfare and public glare.

Kensington Palace said William and Kate were "delighted to announce" their son's name, adding that the baby will be known as "His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge."

The name George ? borne by six kings ? befits the boy now third in line to the British throne and was a favorite among British bookmakers, evoking the steadfastness of the queen's father, George VI, who rallied the nation during World War II.

Alexander is a name shared by three medieval Scottish kings, and Louis could be a tribute to Lord Louis Mountbatten, uncle to the queen's husband, Prince Philip, and the last British viceroy of India before it gained independence in 1947. William's father, Prince Charles, was close to Mountbatten, who was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army in 1979.

The announcement of the name, just two days after the baby's birth, was quick by royal standards. Queen Elizabeth II and Philip took a month before settling on the name Charles for the Prince of Wales. Charles and Princess Diana took a week before settling on William's four names.

While a king usually rules under his given name, precedent shows that the prince is not hidebound by George. The first name of George VI was actually Albert, but he picked his fourth name to use as sovereign in honor of his father, George V.

For now, palace officials say, William and Kate are spending "private and quiet time for them to get to know their son." Some of their discussions may revolve around how to shield him from the media.

The young prince's relationship with the media appeared to get off to a good start ? an encouraging sign for a royal family that has had tense moments with the press.

The baby slept through his first photo op Tuesday outside London's St. Mary's Hospital, while his parents beamed as they chatted easily with reporters.

"I thought, 'Is this an Oscar-winning performance?'" said Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine. "But I think they were so genuinely overjoyed that they wanted to show off the baby."

After leaving the hospital, the couple introduced their son to his uncle, Prince Harry, and to great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who was keen to see the baby before she starts her annual summer vacation in Scotland later this week.

Then they headed to see Kate's parents in their village near London ? pretty much like any regular family.

There has been so much royal drama in the last few decades that it's easy to forget William had, by royal standards, a relatively normal childhood.

His parents' troubled marriage may have ended in divorce, but Charles and Diana were devoted parents who tried to spend as much time as possible with their children, albeit with an assist from nannies. While the queen was sometimes away on official tours for months at a time when her children were young, Charles and Diana took William along on a tour to Australia when he was just 9 months old.

The queen was educated at home, in keeping with royal tradition. But she sent her own children to boarding schools, and Charles and Diana did the same with William and Harry ? choosing Eton, one of the most prestigious boys' schools in the country.

"William's childhood was normal by upper-middle-class standards ? private schools, expensive holidays, McDonald's in a smart part of town as opposed to a grotty part of town," said royal historian Robert Lacey. "I think, really, one is going to see more of the same."

Lacey said Kate's middle-class background will also help ensure her son gets a broader world view than some of his royal predecessors. The baby's maternal grandparents, Carole and Michael Middleton, are self-made millionaires who run a party-planning business from the village of Bucklebury, west of London.

"From Buckingham Palace to Bucklebury ? these are the two elements that will be in this child's upbringing," Lacey said.

Lacey noted that on Kate's side the baby prince had "a grandfather who started off dispatching aircraft from Heathrow Airport and a grandmother who started out as a flight attendant and grew up on a council estate, who came from coal-mining stock in Durham" in northern England.

"That is all funneling through," he said.

William's childhood normality was possible because the palace struck a deal with the media: privacy in exchange for a number of agreed-upon photo opportunities at birthdays and during school holidays.

Seward said Kate and William will try to arrange a similar deal for their son. "When they have got time to think, they will have to do some kind of deal with the press," she said. "In return for some really beautiful photographs, they will be left alone."

British media adhered to the agreement while William and Harry were children. But once they reached adulthood, all bets were off. Photos soon appeared of Prince Harry on drunken nights out, or wearing a Nazi outfit to a costume party. Tabloid reporters were also secretly hacking the mobile phone voice mails of royal aides to get scoops.

The revelation of the scale of that illegal eavesdropping ? on celebrities, politicians and crime victims, as well as the royals ? horrified the British public and chastened the rambunctious press, although that may be a temporary state of affairs.

Palace officials still have some sway over newspaper editors. When they complained about photos of William and Kate walking on a beach near their home in Wales, British newspapers did not run them.

The foreign media is much harder to control, as the palace learned when an Italian magazine ran topless pictures of Kate taken during a holiday in France.

Still, Lacey points out, the media scrutiny can cut both ways.

This baby will be the first future monarch to grow up in the era of Twitter, Facebook and other social media, giving him "an incredible insight into how the country and population he is supposed to represent live and breathe," Lacey said.

"In the Middle Ages, we have legends of idealistic princes who would dress in ordinary clothes and go out into the streets of town after dark to see how their subjects lived. The electronic media, for all their hazards, do offer this new dimension to an heir."

While Kate and William get to know little George away from the media frenzy that surrounded his birth, there is one royal appearance on the horizon: The new parents are expected to soon choose a photographer for the baby's first official portrait.

Strong iPhone sales buoy Apple's third-quarter, shares climb

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc's quarterly revenue and earnings beat Wall Street's targets on surprisingly strong sales of its flagship iPhone, sending its shares up 4 percent.

But profit slid 22 percent in its fiscal third quarter as margins were pressured by growing competition and a wider array of lower-end devices such as older smartphones.

Apple earned $6.9 billion, or $7.47 a share, on revenue of $35.3 billion. That compared with a profit of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 a share, on revenue of about $35 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Wall Street's average forecast was for revenue of $35.02 billion and earnings per share of $7.32, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Apple reportedly hiring new talent to solve iWatch design problems

Apple reportedly hiring new talent to solve iWatch design problems

Rumors, suggestions and trademark applications have been building a case for an wrist-worn Apple product for some time now -- an official iWatch to fulfill the wearable potential of the iPod Nano. Now, the Financial Times says the company is "aggressively" hiring to help it get the product ready for release. According to the usual sources familiar with the matter, the new staff might have been sought out to help Apple wrap its head around wearable computing, moving the project to the next stage of development. The timing of the hires might also imply that the iWatch won't be ready until late next year. Of course, if you can't wait that long, you can always just make your own.

EXCLUSIVE Puppeteer Interview with Gavin Moore from Japan Studio

Puppeteer was announced to the world at Gamescom last year, and I recently had the chance to play it, and talk with it?s Creative Director, Gavin Moore.

_sony_Artwork_11929main_visual_EN

Puppeteer is a brand new franchise developed exclusively for PlayStation 3 by SCE Japan Studio. Set in a magical puppeteer?s theatre, the game will introduce you to a strange and fantastic world, where the environment is constantly changing. Players will enjoy a rich, dark fairy-tale where surprises lurk around every corner.

One dark moonlit night, a young boy named Kutaro was carried away by the maleficent Moon Bear King to a black castle where the unlucky lad was transformed into a puppet.

Kutaro displeased the terrible tyrant, who devoured the boy?s wooden head and cast away his body.

But the headless hero was not alone, for he had discovered a very special pair of scissors to help him on his harrowing adventure to find his head, and his way home.

Gavin Moore is a Creative Director for Sony Computer Entertainments Japan Studio.

He has spent 20 years honing his craft in video games. Prior to joining Sony, Gavin cut his teeth as a pixel artist and animator at Mindscape, working on classic games machines such as the Amiga, SNES, Megadrive and original Gameboy. He joined SCEE in 1998, where he worked on the hugely successful The Getaway, which sold over 4 million units worldwide. Gavin currently lives and works in Japan, where he has spent the last 9 years immersing himself in Japanese culture and video game creation.

So over to Gavin:

Thank you to Gavin for taking the time to not only talk to me about Puppeteer, but also playing the game with me, which was a lot of fun.

Timbers defeat Galaxy 2-1

by ANNE M. PETERSON (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press

PORTLAND -- Andrew Jean-Baptiste had been planning a celebration for just this kind of moment.

The young Portland defender doffed his shirt after his goal in stoppage time gave the Portland Timbers a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night.

''Game winner. Nice body. Why not?'' Jean-Baptiste joked.

His header got past Los Angeles goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini in the 94th minute after Ryan Johnson had evened the score at 1-all in the 27th minute. It was Jean-Baptiste's first goal of the season.

With the victory, Portland moved into second place in the Western Conference behind Real Salt Lake.

The Galaxy were without forward Landon Donovan, who is playing with the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Donovan scored his 53rd career international goal and the United States defeated Cuba 4-1 in Salt Lake City earlier on Saturday.

The Timbers were without Will Johnson, playing for Canada, and Rodney Wallace, playing for Costa Rica, in the Gold Cup. Frederic Piquionne, who played in Martinique's first two Gold Cup games, was listed as a reserve for Portland against the Galaxy.

The Galaxy had won two straight, including a 2-0 victory over FC Dallas at home last Sunday.

''We're frustrated, we're angry,'' defender Sean Franklin said. ''We're a good team, we're better than that, with the kind of team and talent we have. We have too much experience on this team to get zero points on the road.''

The Timbers were coming off a 1-0 road loss to the Columbus Crew last weekend, which snapped a 15-match undefeated streak for Portland under first-year coach Caleb Porter.

The Galaxy went ahead 1-0 on Marcelo Sarvas' well-placed header in the 18th minute. The Timbers had not conceded a goal at Jeld-Wen Field in a league game since March 9.

Portland tied it when Darlington Nagbe fed a free kick to a charging Ryan Johnson to beat Cudicini. It was Ryan Johnson's sixth goal of the season, tying him with Will Johnson for the team lead.

Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts defended a dangerously close penalty kick from Juninho, tipping it over the goal in the 37th minute. A few moments later, Ricketts came far out of the goal for a sliding stop on Gyasi Zardes' breakaway.

He made another key save on another Zardes attempt in the 82nd minute.

Jean Baptiste said he never actually saw his goal go in.

''I heard the cheering, I saw the net move and I didn't see their guy get up happy,'' he said. ''I was pretty sure it was a goal.''

Afterward Porter flashed a thumbs-up to the crowd.

''Winning teams, when you need more, you get more,'' porter said. ''Losing teams shrink.''

Attendance was announced at 20,674 for the Timbers' 43rd consecutive sellout.

The two teams played to a scoreless draw on June 19 in Carson. The Galaxy is 4-2-1 all-time over the Timbers, who joined MLS in 2011.

'India to lead global growth; bet on financial services'

Ajay Piramal of Piramal Group hailing from a family that ran a very successful textile industry business, switched track to become one of India?s renowned pharmaceutical entrepreneurs business. Today, he has holds the reputation of being one of India?s savviest deal-makers and investors.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Piramal adds that he wishes to be both a strategic investor and a financial powerhouse focusing on sectors where the risks in execution have been overcome and are in need of last-mile funding. He says that the economy touching a bottom was one of the reasons behind the shift of his investment focus from overseas markets to India.

Below is the edited transcript of the show on CNBC-TV18

Q: After you sold your business to Abbott , you used the pile of cash to foray into real estate, financial services business and earned the reputation of being a very savvy and contrarian investor. What is your outlook regarding the investment climate?

A: As an investor, I exited the domestic Indian pharmaceutical business in 2010 as I felt the investment climate was not very conducive. In 2010, we decided to diversify a little and enter overseas markets. We invested USD 630 million in an information management company in the US. Now I think that the investment climate in India has probably hit a bottom and its time to re-look at investing in India.

Q: That's a contrarian view because at the moment one couldn?t get more gloomier on India?? the uninterrupted depreciation in the rupee, complete lack of any policy action.

A: My view was contrarian even in 2010. Investors wondered why we exited the pharmaceutical sector which was at its peak. But one look at the valuations for our domestic business in 2010 makes it clear that it will not be possible to get the same valuations today.

Q: Were you paid nine times your sales figures?

A: A little over that and about 30 times operating profits.

Q: Putting that into perspective, the Daiichi-Ranbaxy deal was five times sales?

A: That's right.

Q: Do you think those valuations will return?

A: You can never say 'never'. It looks difficult today because the domestic economic environment is not what it used to be. Frankly, the buzz that India generated in 2010 is not there today. I don't think there is any deal that?s taking place at these valuations today.

Q: You mean the buzz in the pharma sector?

A: The buzz in the pharma sector, the buzz about India as a really hot growth economy is not what it was in 2010.

Q: Yet you think today is not a bad time for investment in India?

A: I believe that in the future India?s growth rate in is going to be higher than rest of the world. There are so many needs much we have?? consumption, infrastructure. Economic growth has actually suffered a lot in the last few years. I don?t see that trend continuing. There will be changes.

Q: But isn't it your style to look and invest slowly as and when the opportunity arises ?

A: That's right. Yes, I have been investing. Another plan that I followed up on after exiting the pharma sector in 2010 besides the information management investment, was to start planning a foray into financial services. That?s where I found opportunities to invest.

An overview of the In the financial-services sector shows that the banking sector is stretched due to tepid economic growth and the lack of sufficient funds. The returns on offer are higher than what one would get in normal circumstances.

Q: You have also invested in Shriram Transport . Do you plan to be a strategic investor in high growth financial companies or become a financial powerhouse?

A: I plan to be both. I have already started a non-banking financial company (NBFC) which has been performing well. I have also invested in Shriram Transport because this sector is unique. Despite the entire commercial-vehicles sector coping with difficult times, Shriram Transport Finance has been able to record strong growth with a change in the focus on funding second-hand vehicles.

I believe that there are many sectors such as infrastructure which need last mile funding and the risks in execution have been overcome.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic for iPad

This month (July 15th) marks the 10th anniversary of the release on the XBOX of the classic Star Wars RPG Knights of the Old Republic. There have been announcements that players of the free-to-play MMO ?The Old Republic? would be getting some rewards, but not much else has been said. Well, now we learn that as part of the celebration iPad gamers can get Knights of the Old Republic for $4.99 ? 50% off regular price! As noted on the App Store:

Help us celebrate the 10th anniversary of KOTOR with 50% off for a limited time!

I reviewed the iPad release and found it a faithful adaptation of the classic game. The controls and gameplay, designed for the first-generation XBOX, worked very well on the touchscreen. My only criticism was with the movement system being a bit bizarre and requiring adjustment. But this remains one of the high-points in the RPG genre and for a game that will take a minimum of 40 hours to complete (I still take ~60 because I am a ?completist?), $4.99 is an absolute bargain.

There is no mention of how long the sale will last, but I assume it will be in effect through the 15th anyway.

Head to the iTunes App Store and grab this classic game now!

Southern California Children?s Museum Kicks Off with South Pasadena Event

Posted By : Article by CHRISTOPHER FLOCH | Photography courtesy SCCM

Posted On : 3:44 pm | July 12, 2013

The inaugural fund raiser to benefit the Southern California Children?s Museum was held at South Pasadena?s Arroyo Seco Miniature golf course on Thursday, July 11. The purpose of this event was to raise funds for a permanent space to house exhibits in the San Gabriel Valley, and supporters came with their families to enjoy the evening.

?This event was much different than other fund raisers I have attended, it wasn?t just a boring sit down dinner,? said James Schimmoller, husband of the group?s co-founder and Vice President, Maureen. ? This event highlights the type of activities the Museum will offer children, hands-on activities.?

SCCM?s mission statement is as follows ? To cultivate a child?s wonder, stimulate curiosity, and motivate learning through interactive exhibits. Activities will be play based and focused on developing a child?s gross and fine motor skills.

This museum differs from the popular Kidspace Children?s Museum in that it will focus on arts and culture. It is primarily designed for children under eight. The goal is to create an environment focused on early childhood education while offering ?a place to create life long memories.?

To kick off the festivities, the children were each presented with a golf club and a colored ball to begin the miniature golfing experience. It was a unseasonably cool summer evening, and the balls were being hit under bridges and around corners and through windmills.

Some children even scored the elusive ?hole in one,? bringing many smiles to the families in attendance. ?Jason Arkle, 3 years old, who attended with his mother, Samera Arkle, accomplished the feat.

Samera Arkle said she ?loves introducing her son to art and artists and the one-on-one connection it forges between mother and son?.

Compared to other near by museum?s like the Skirball, The Hammer, or LACMA, this museum focuses one hundred percent on the child.

The idea of the museum was sparked by a group of Pasadena mothers wanting to facilitate children?s inherent desire to explore and learn about their world through arts and culture.

The Board of Directors includes President Catherine Welch, Vice President Maureen Schimmoller, Treasurer Jennifer Quan, Secretary Maren Hoecker, Amy Belmont-Mcnully, Lisa Munoz-Bruchey and Allison Turner.

?With our museum, we want the focus to be arts and culture, that includes a lot of hands on activities,? said Catherine Welch.

Some might believe this museum will be in competition with Kidspace Children?s Museum, however, that that is not the case, according to Catherine Welch.

?We love Kidspace, we?ve talked with them, we feel we can work alongside them,? said Welch.

The funding for SCCM comes from grants, along with private donations. The organization has received a 501 K non-profit status.

Welch expects to open the 15,000-20,000 sq. ft. facility, housing permanent exhibits,in the San Gabriel Valley, within a year.

Spread around the grounds were colorful posters depicting iconic Southern California landmarks, including the Santa Monica Pier, and the Griffith Observatory. Imagine the joy of sitting under the stars, around a campfire, roasting marshmallows and telling tales.

?It?s adventures like these I want my children to have, this area has such diversity,? James Schimmoller said.

Amid the avid golfing, parents and children alike were treated to delicious food prepared by chef Frank Sayeski of Hunington Catering in Pasadena. On the menu was mini-cheeseburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers ith all the toppings. For the adults beer, wine and cocktails were offered.

On Saturday, September 14, at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia is the Touch-a-Truck day. A hands on learning experience for childen to explore a variety of large trucks, heavy machinery, recreational vehicles, emergency vehicles and more.

To follow the museums progress, or to become a donor contact www.socalkids.org or call (626) 657-0357.

Torres sends Panama into Gold Cup knockout stage

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:56 p.m. ET July 11, 2013

SEATTLE (AP) - Gabriel Torres buried a penalty in the 85th minute and Panama advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup tournament with a 1-0 win over Martinique on Thursday night.

Martinique, which beat Canada in its first game, can still advance out of the group stage, but will need to beat Mexico on Sunday.

"That was the result we wanted," Panama coach Julio Dely Valdez said. "It was a really complicated match, but we knew we were going to face a good team. Looking at the game, we had a certain superiority. Maybe it wasn't that big, but it was a certain superiority."

Torres, who had three dangerous shots saved from the run of play by goalkeeper Emmanuel Vermignon, made good on his try from the spot, sending the ball to the back left corner. The penalty was given when Jairo Jimenez was taken down in the box by Sebastien Cretinoir.

Martinique, which finished the game a man down when Jacky Berdix was sent off early in the 73rd minute with his second yellow card of the night, nearly tied the game in stoppage time. But Panama goalkeeper Jaime Penedo pulled down a target ball in the box while crashing into Martinique's Kevin Parsemain.

"Any red card like that has an impact," Martinique coach Patrick Cavelan said. "However, that's football, and you just have to adapt for it."

Martinique, which didn't even get off a shot during the first 45 minutes, showed some spark coming out of halftime. Steve Gustan launched a 25-yard shot just two minutes into the half that Panama goalkeeper Jaime Penedo dove to his left to save. Gustan had another try just three minutes later, but his shot from the top left corner of the box went barely wide.

Two plays in the box that could have resulted in a penalty kick for Martinique - a hand ball in the first half, and Gustan being taken down in the second half - were not called.

"In the last few games, I'm counting five penalties that weren't given," Cavelan said. "That counts for a lot."

Boeing 787 fire incident shuts London Heathrow airport

Heathrow Airport has been closed after an Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliner just caught fire. A tweet from the airport said the plane was stationary and no passengers were on board. The cause of the fire is not known.??

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

LONDON - Boeing's ill-fated 787 Dreamliner was involved in another incident Friday when a jet caught fire at London's Heathrow airport, forcing the closure of both runways for more than an hour.

There were no passengers on board the Ethiopian Airlines plane, which was parked away from terminal buildings and no reported injuries, but news of the incident caused shares in the Chicago-based manufacturer to tumble.

In a separate development, another Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Britain's Thomson Airways flying to Florida from northwest England was forced to return to Britain due to technical issues as a precaution on Friday, the airline said.?

The aircraft type has been plagued by problems with its batteries. Regulators in the U.S. and Japan temporarily grounded the Dreamliner earlier this year amid fears of fires linked to the batteries.

However, David Learmount, aviation expert and reporter for Flight International magazine, told the U.K.'s Sky News that it was not clear if the same problem was to blame for Friday's blaze. He said fire damage was visible to the roof of the rear of the aircraft whereas the battery compartments are located under the cabin floor.

Pictures showed the plane involved in Friday's fire covered in fire-retardant foam.?

An airport spokesman said: "We can confirm there has been an on-board internal fire involving an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft and the airport's emergency services are in attendance.

"The aircraft was parked on a remote parking stand. There were no passengers on board and there are no reported injuries at this time."

In a statement posted on Twitter, Boeing said: "We?re aware of the 787 event?@HeathrowAirport?and have Boeing personnel there. We're working to fully understand and address this."

The aircraft was not blocking either runway, but with all the airport's fire crews tacking the Boeing 787 incident, authorities were forced to suspend all departures and arrivals because of safety rules.

Although the runways later reopened, major ongoing delays were expected for travelers using the airport, which is the world's busiest in terms of international passenger traffic.

Gartner, IDC say 2Q PC shipments fell 11 percent

(AP) ? Worldwide shipments of personal computers fell 11 percent in the April-June period, according to data from research firms Gartner and IDC, as people continued to migrate to tablets and other mobile devices.

Gartner Inc. said Wednesday that the PC industry is now experiencing the longest decline in its history, as shipments dropped for the fifth consecutive quarter. Computer makers shipped 76 million PCs in the April-June period, down from 85 million in the same three months of 2012, according to Gartner.

International Data Corp., which uses slightly different methodology, essentially came to the same conclusion, though it noted that the decline was slightly smaller than expected.

"With second quarter growth so close to forecast, we are still looking for some improvement in growth during the second half of the year," said Jay Chou, senior analyst at IDC, in a statement. "Slower growth in Europe and China reflect the risks, while the improved U.S. outlook reflects potential improvement."

Gartner's Mikako Kitagawa said inexpensive tablets are displacing low-end computers in "mature" markets such as the United States. In emerging markets like China, meanwhile "inexpensive tablets have become the first computing device for many people, who at best are deferring the purchase of a PC. This is also accounting for the collapse of the mini notebook market," she added.

IDC said the numbers "reflect a market that is still struggling with the transition to touch-based systems running Windows 8." Microsoft Corp.'s latest operating system launched in October and sales have disappointed analysts. But Kitagawa said that while "Windows 8 has been blamed by some as the reason for the PC market's decline, we believe this is unfounded as it does not explain the sustained decline in PC shipments."

Lenovo was the No. 1 PC maker, beating out rival Hewlett-Packard Co. by a narrow margin, according to both firms.

The U.S. Jobs That Went to Immigrants | FrontPage Magazine

iStock_000018164382MediumA new report concludes that immigrants accounted for all the employment gains in the US labor market from 2000-2013. The report challenges the notion that immigration helps the economy, a common argument by those who favor comprehensive immigration reform, and S. 744, the recently passed Senate immigration bill, specifically.

The report was commission by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), and it was written by Steven A. Camarota, the director of research at CIS, and Karen Zeigler, a demographer. It concluded that the native-born population accounted for two-thirds of overall growth in the working-age population (16 to 65), but none of the net growth in employment among the working-age has gone to natives. As the report stated:

While jobs are always being created and lost, and the number of workers rises and falls with the economy, a new analysis of government data shows that all of the net gain in employment over the last 13 years has gone to immigrants (legal and illegal). From the first quarter of 2000 to the first quarter of 2013, the number of natives working actually fell by 1.3 million while the overall size of the working-age (16 to 65) native population increased by 16.4 million. Over the same time period, the number of immigrants working (legal and illegal) increased by 5.3 million.

The study also found that the native percentage of the working population has decreased by nearly 15% in the last decade.

Even before the recession, when the economy was expanding (2000 to 2007), 60 percent of the net increase in employment among the working-age went to immigrants, even though they accounted for just 38 percent of population growth among the working-age population.

Speaking with the Washington Times, Alex Nowrash, an immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute, challenged the findings of the CIS study. Mr. Nowrash concluded that immigrants and natives rarely compete for the same jobs because both groups end up specializing in different niches.

In April, Florida Senator Marco Rubio sent a letter to David Addington of the Heritage Foundation in which he stated that his current immigration reform plan would be an economic boon by shifting the immigration population to include more skilled workers:

As I consider the potential impact of immigration reform, I am keenly aware that there will be budgetary impacts when illegal immigrants begin to access citizenship beginning 13 years after immigration reform is enacted. However, I also believe that immigration reform that shifts the mix of legal immigration away from family-based toward highly-skilled/merit based combined with bringing millions of undocumented aliens out of the underground economy will improve the labor market, increase entrepreneurship and create jobs, leading to a net increase in economic growth and reducing the deficit.

The CIS study comes as the fate of immigration reform remains up in the air even as S. 744 passed the US Senate in June. Immigration reform now moves to the US House of Representatives which is currently considering a number of immigration reform bills, all of which are currently much less ambitious.

At roughly the same time the Senate was passing S. 744, the Judiciary Committee for the US House of Representatives passed the Strengthen and Fortify Enforcement Act (SAFE). SAFE is an enforcement-only bill that not only makes being in the country illegally a federal crime (it?s currently only an administrative violation), but would provide more authority to local and state officials to make immigration-related arrests.

SAFE is one of four immigration-related bills making its way through the House of Representatives. All four are significantly less ambitious than what has passed in the Senate.

Media reports claimed that a House counterpart to the Senate?s ?Gang of 8? was close to agreeing to their own version of comprehensive immigration reform, but that has yet to materialize.

If any of the four bills currently making their way in the House passes, the House and Senate would conference. In that case, the ambitious Senate bill would have to be reconciled with the much less ambitious bill from the House. If nothing passes in the House, immigration reform will die.

The current Senate version of immigration reform is more than one thousand pages long. Despite what Nancy Pelosi once said, it?s much better if the public knows what?s in the bill before any bill passes. Now that immigration reform has reached the House of Representatives, it?s important that the issues be fully debated and analyzed. The true nature of benefits from immigration are chief among the issues that should be discussed and debated.
