The U.S. Department of State issued a new travel warning for Somalia. Because there is no U.S. Embassy in Somalia, the Department of State strongly urges citizens to avoid all travel to the region, as the security situation is unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

Kidnappings, bombings, murder and other violent incidents pose increasing threats to travelers and Somali nationals alike. The Al-Shabaab terrorist organization has been known to launch attacks in civilian populated areas with little warning.

U.S. citizens are also urged to avoid sailing the coast of Somalia. Attacks have been known to occur thousands of miles offshore. Boats are at risk of seizure by pirates and crews have been held for ransom in international waters off the Horn of Africa.

The Department of State strongly urges travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to stay up-to-date on important emergency information. Because there is no Embassy in Somalia, travelers should contact the Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. For more information on the Somalia travel warning, visit the Department of State website here.
