Arterial stiffness may predict high blood pressure | Fitness for Health

According to a study, the hardening of the wall of the aorta is associated with an increased risk of hypertension.

The aorta the largest artery in the body leading from the heart to the chest and abdomen.

In this study, researchers analyzed seven years of data from more than 1,700 people enrolled in the Framingham Heart Study (Framingham Heart Study) from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. UU. The average age was 60 years.

The analysis showed that increased rigidity of the aorta was associated with a higher risk of high blood pressure recent development, also known as hypertension. However, initial blood pressure of patients was not associated independently with risk of progressive aortic stiffness.

This suggests that aortic stiffness could contribute to high blood pressure, rather than the result of high blood pressure, according to Dr. Bernhard Kaess, Framingham Heart Study, and colleagues.

But although the study found an association between aortic stiffness and the development of high blood pressure, did not demonstrate the existence of a cause and effect.

The research appears in the Sept. 5 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The results indicate that the stiffness and function of the aorta and other arteries could be important potential targets of treatment to prevent high blood pressure, the researchers said in a news release from the journal.

The hardening of the blood vessels as people age is an important risk factor for age-related diseases and death.
